The Record
Most legislators file bills. Shawn Still passes them. Last session he sponsored nine House bills through the Senate and authored or co-sponsored 57 of the 190 Senate bills the Governor signed into law — one in three. Here is what that work actually did for the people of District 48.
Schools
Phones Out, Focus Back In
Shawn carried the bill banning cell phones in Georgia high school classrooms. Teachers asked for it. Parents backed it. Students are learning again.
A Path Straight Into a Career
He created dual achievement and dual enrollment programs connecting high school students with Georgia's technical colleges, so a diploma can come with a credential and a job offer attached.
More Options for More Families
Shawn expanded Student Scholarship Organizations, giving families a real say in where their child learns best.
Accountability Where the Money Goes
He wrote new accountability standards for charter schools and launched a pilot program to bring dropouts back into the classroom and across the stage
Public Safety
Training the People Who See It First
Human trafficking is the fight Shawn is known for at the Capitol. His law requires hotels, short-term rentals, and other front-line businesses to train staff to recognize trafficking and report it. It was signed before the World Cup brought the world to Georgia.
Keeping Contraband Out of Georgia Jails
Weapons, drugs, and phones were being flown by drone over jail walls to inmates, and Georgia’s correctional officers had no way to prevent it. Shawn wrote legislation to give them the tools to secure our correctional facilities again.
No Second Chances for Animal Abusers
He created Georgia's animal cruelty conviction registry, so anyone convicted of abusing an animal can be stopped from ever adopting or buying another one.
Costs for Families
Lowering the Income Tax
Shawn backed the reduction in Georgia's state income tax, keeping more of every paycheck where it belongs.
No More Surprise Ambulance Bills
You call 911 in an emergency. You should not get a bill weeks later for a number nobody told you. Shawn's law sets the rate up front so families are not blindsided.
Protecting Seniors and the Families Who Love Them
Referral agencies were quietly charging senior living facilities enormous placement fees and never telling the family. Shawn wrote the law forcing them to disclose it.
Reforming a Broken Legal System
Lawsuit abuse drives up the cost of everything from insurance to groceries. Tort reform has been Shawn's priority since day one, and he helped deliver it.
Working Georgians
Benefits That Move With You
More people are working two and three jobs to make one living. Shawn sponsored portable benefits for gig and part-time workers so their coverage follows them.
Faster Answers When You're Out of Work
He modernized Department of Labor claims and appeals so filers can opt into email instead of waiting on the mail. Faster claims, faster benefits.
Right Here at Home
Term Limits in Forsyth County
Shawn passed term limits for the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.
Protecting Gwinnett Taxpayers
When voters reject a transit referendum, they should not have to fight it again the next cycle. Shawn's law requires an eight-year wait before it can come back
